In him was life…

John 1:4

In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. John 1:4 (NIV)

In the previous verse, we read that Jesus made all things. The verse establishes that Jesus is life. Later, Jesus will say: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me…” (John 14:6)

He is life. Physical and spiritual life.

This verse also connects Jesus to another moniker: the Light. Later, Jesus will expand on this:

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

While I am in the world, I am the light of the world. John 9:5

So, in the first few verses of John, we have learned that Jesus is: God, eternal, the Word, part of the triune Godhead, Creator, Life and Light!

He is worthy of our praise!
